North Carolina Campus Engagement

The higher education community and civic engagement movement in North Carolina began in 1993 when the NC Campus Volunteers (NCCV) Coalition emerged [Read the History ]. In 2002, this group formed a North Carolina affiliate of the national Campus Compact organization, headquartered in Boston. After 20 years of affiliation with Campus Compact, North Carolina Campus Compact will chart a new course on July 1, 2022.

We will operate under the new name North Carolina Campus Engagement (NCCE). This name was approved by the Executive Board after a thoughtful selection process that involved a survey of members, consultation with the Advisory Council, and feedback from key stakeholders. We are excited that the new name clearly conveys our goal to promote campus engagement – both within the institution and beyond.

Our mission [preparing students for civic & social responsibility, partnering with communities for positive change, and strengthening democracy] will remain the same. However, on July 1 we will release Vision 2025, our new vision and bold new direction. Throughout Spring 2022 a team of community engagement professionals, from campuses throughout the state, convened to help create this three-year vision document.

We will maintain our status as a presidential organization with membership representing 2- and 4-year, public and independent/private higher education institutions in NC. We will also continue to partner with a variety of local, state, regional and national organizations.

We will continue to operate on the fiscal calendar July 1 – June 30. Current membership dues will not change. Our annual membership drive will continue to take place April through June.

Our staff, led by Executive Director Leslie Garvin, will remain the same. Our office will continue to be hosted by Elon University. Our Executive Board, comprised of member presidents, and our Advisory Council, comprised of campus representatives, will continue to guide our efforts.

After July 1, institutions of higher education will have the option to join the national organization separately and pay their relevant dues.

We will continue to offer high quality and diverse programming to campus members, including all those listed on our Member Benefits page. However, several new programs and resources are being planned that will be launched in fall 2022 including a Student Dialogue Ambassadors initiative and an information literacy project.

We invite you to attend a Launch Party to celebrate this exciting transition on June 29 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
